Strengthen QLD laws on group assaults and filmed violence

Strengthen QLD laws on group assaults and filmed violence

The issue

Coordinated group assaults involving multiple offenders targeting a single young person are becoming an increasingly serious community safety concern in QLD.

These incidents often involve a group surrounding and attacking one victim, while others film and distribute the violence on social media, compounding the physical harm with public humiliation and long-term psychological trauma.

Current assault laws do not specifically recognise the aggravated nature of coordinated group violence or the additional harm caused when attacks are recorded and distributed online.

As technology evolves, our legislation has not kept pace with the realities of digitally amplified violence.

This petition calls for the QLD Government to modernise legislation so that coordinated group assaults and the filming and distribution of such violence are recognised as aggravating factors, ensuring the law properly reflects the seriousness of these harms and better protects victims.

We are calling on the Queensland government to take decisive action by:

1. Strengthening laws surrounding group assaults, making it clear that physical violence of any form will not be tolerated and perpetrators will be held accountable.

2. Implementing algorithms on social media platforms and message platforms that identify violent group assaults, and stop anyone uploading such videos.

3. Implementing strict penalties for those who film violent acts and facilitate their online distribution.

4. Ensuring law enforcement receives adequate training to handle such cases with the seriousness they deserve.

Our children deserve to feel safe in their schools and their communities without the fear of being assaulted or humiliated for others' entertainment.

Stronger laws and regulations can ensure a safer environment for today's youth and future generations.

It's time to send a powerful message that violence and its glorification online are unacceptable. Please join me in demanding action from our leaders.

Let's protect our children and prevent further tragedies.

Sign this petition to urge the Queensland government to strengthen their laws on group assaults and the distribution of filmed violence on social media. Together, we can make a difference.
