Strengthen Ohio Laws to Combat Puppy Mills

The Issue

I am a Girl Scout and my troop recently became aware of how many dogs in Ohio come from puppy mills. We all want our laws to be stronger to prevent animal abuse. Puppy mills are notorious for their inhumane conditions, where dogs are often kept in overcrowded cages with little to no veterinary care, socialization, or exercise. According to the Humane Society of the United States, there are an estimated 10,000 puppy mills across the country, resulting in the sale of over 2 million puppies each year. These horrible puppy mills are often not caught or held accountable and about 20/100 of these "problem puppy mills" tracked by the Humane Society are located right here in Ohio!

In Ohio alone, numerous reports have highlighted cases of severe neglect and abuse within these facilities. Stronger regulations and enforcement can help ensure that these animals receive the care they deserve and reduce the prevalence of such cruel practices. 90% of puppies from pet stores are from puppy mills. All too often these puppies have serious long-term medical issues or get very sick. There are existing proposals for improved laws, such as HB443 that would make it harder for stores to sell puppies from puppy mills, but it has stalled in the state legislature.

Please join us in urging Ohio lawmakers to implement stricter regulations on puppy mills and enhance enforcement measures against violators. All support is greatly appreciated, but most of all we need people of Ohio to sign, as this law will mainly affect our local Ohio area. Sign this petition today to let them know that Ohioans want them to help protect innocent animals from suffering!
