Strengthen OC’s DUI Laws to Save Lives

Strengthen OC’s DUI Laws to Save Lives
The Issue
My name is Jonathan, and I am writing not only as a grieving family member but as an advocate determined to prevent further loss. On April 19th, my family was forever changed when my father and my young niece were killed by a drunk driver. One person’s reckless decision ended two lives, shattered our family, and left a permanent void in our hearts.
Their deaths were not accidents. They were preventable. And that is why I am urging you to take immediate and bold action to strengthen our laws.
We must require mandatory ignition interlock devices for all DUI offenders in Orange County, even those facing their first offense. These devices are proven to reduce repeat offenses by preventing intoxicated individuals from starting their vehicles.
Moreover, we need to increase the penalties for repeat offenders and for cases that result in injury or death. The consequences of driving under the influence must be severe enough to deter individuals from making such life-threatening decisions.
Education and prevention are crucial. By expanding programs in our schools and communities, we can instill a culture of responsibility and awareness from an early age. Understanding the severe ramifications of impaired driving could save countless lives.
Victim impact panels should also be mandated as part of sentencing. Offenders must face the reality of the damage they have caused and hear directly from those whose lives have been affected.
Drunk driving is not just a personal problem; it is a community crisis that we can and must address. The devastation it causes is widespread and affects not only the victims but families, friends, and the entire community. We have the power to change this dangerous trajectory and save lives.
Please join me in advocating for these changes to Orange County's DUI laws to protect our loved ones and prevent further tragedies. Sign this petition to urge our legislators to act now.
