George Gascón, born in 1954, is an American attorney and former police officer renowned for his extensive career in law enforcement and public service. Gascón has been a prominent figure in California's legal landscape, serving as the District Attorney of Los Angeles County from December 7, 2020, to December 3, 2024. Before this role, he was the District Attorney of San Francisco from 2011 to 2019. His law enforcement career includes serving as Chief of Police in both Mesa, Arizona, and San Francisco, as well as Assistant Chief of Police for the LAPD. Initially a member of the Republican Party, he later joined the Democratic Party. Gascón holds a Bachelor's degree in History from Cal State Long Beach and a JD from Western State University.
