As part of a dedicated group of three individuals passionate about health and the well-being of young people in New Zealand, we are calling for urgent policy changes to address the alarming rise of youth vaping across our nation. Our journey into this social action began when we personally witnessed how easily accessible and attractively marketed vaping products are to our youth, often enticing them with the allure of sweet, fruity, and indulgent flavors.
The accessibility and appeal of these products have led to a concerning increase in vaping among young people, with a significant percentage reporting regular use. According to the Ministry of Health, there was a marked rise in vaping numbers among adolescents in recent years, outlining a public health crisis that demands our immediate action. The current regulations around marketing, packaging, and flavours of vaping products are inadequate and fail to protect the younger population from potential addiction and health risks.
Vaping manufacturers specifically target younger demographics through vibrant packaging, flavored e-liquids that mirror candy and sweets, and strategic marketing that often mimics lifestyle advertising. It's imperative that our regulations adapt to these modern practices much like those for tobacco products did in years past. We are advocating for stricter controls on how these products are marketed and packaged, particularly calling for a ban or severe restriction on flavours that specifically appeal to youth, and clear, consistent messaging around the risks involved with vaping.
