Strengthen Malaysia’s immigration and refugee policies
The Issue
As a concerned Malaysian, I am deeply affected by the ongoing challenges our country faces concerning immigration and refugee management. With increasing numbers of refugees seeking asylum, and a complex immigration system in place, it is imperative to ensure that Malaysia's national security, public resources, and employment opportunities for locals are safeguarded. However, this should not come at the expense of our humanitarian principles and the fundamental respect for human dignity that defines us as a nation.
Malaysia has long been a host to thousands of asylum seekers and refugees, with an estimated 180,000 currently registered with the UNHCR. These individuals are fleeing dangerous situations in their home countries, seeking nothing more than safety and a chance at rebuilding their lives. Our existing policies, however, make integration difficult and leave many of them without legal protection, access to work, or basic services. This not only puts refugees in precarious positions but also strains our public systems and resources.
We must call upon the relevant authorities to:
1. Work towards establishing a comprehensive legal framework that ensures the legal protection of refugees and asylum seekers. This includes granting them the right to work, access to education, and adequate healthcare.
2. Enhance border security and immigration processes to prevent illegal entries while maintaining a compassionate approach to legitimate refugees and asylum seekers.
3. Foster collaboration with international organizations and local NGOs to better integrate these communities, offering language and vocational training to help them contribute positively to Malaysian society.
By balancing security with empathy and providing structured support, we can protect our national interests and extend our humanitarian efforts. Let us not forget that Malaysia's strength lies in its cultural diversity and unity. We must ensure that our policies reflect these values by treating all individuals with respect and fairness, regardless of their background.
