Strengthen Laws and Measures Against Car Theft and Carjacking in Canada

The Issue

I am writing this petition to share a recent, distressing experience in our community that highlights the urgent need for improved security measures. In the span of just four days, my vehicle was stolen, and my garage was broken into for another car. These incidents not only resulted in financial losses but also left my family, especially kids, feeling vulnerable and unsafe. My daughter doesn't even want to drive or get out of the house anymore. This impacts the mental health of the impacted individuals and families.

Car theft and carjacking are growing concerns across Canada, more so in GTA and Montreal, impacting the safety and well-being of countless individuals and communities. A car is stolen every six minutes in Canada (Maclean's Report) and there is a CFLA report on auto theft in Canada which shows 300% increase in City of Toronto only since 2015. (CFLA Report)

I believe it's time for change. I am calling on all levels of government, enforcement agencies, and our legal system to take stronger measures against car theft and carjacking by enhancing existing laws, increasing penalties, and implementing more effective preventive strategies.

I urge all levels of government to consider the following changes in the law and law enforcement measures.

o    Tougher Penalties: Advocate for stricter penalties for car theft, carjacking, and related offenses to act as a strong deterrent for potential criminals.

o    Enhanced Legislation: Review and improve existing legislation regarding these crimes, ensuring that it is up to date and comprehensive.

o    Increased Law Enforcement Resources: Allocate more resources to law enforcement agencies to combat car theft and carjacking effectively, including more police presence in high-risk areas.

o    Preventive Programs: Fund and support community programs that aim to engage youth and at-risk individuals in constructive activities, addressing the root causes of criminal behavior.

o    Neighborhood Watch Initiatives: Encourage and support the establishment of neighborhood watch programs, promoting community vigilance and cooperation.

o    Victim Support Services: Ensure that there are adequate support services available to help victims of car theft and carjacking with emotional, legal, and financial assistance.

Sign this petition and help me make a change! Together, we can advocate for better security measures in our communities and create a safer future for all in Canada.
