I was molested when I was younger for years. My abuser only got sentenced to 4 years in prison and wasn't able to live in the same county as me. Fast forward to 2023, the same abuser abused another little girl under the age of 16 and was only sentenced to 16 months even though this was his second offense. This is a grave injustice that highlights a systemic problem with our legal system's handling of sexual predators.

The current laws are not sufficient deterrents nor do they provide adequate justice for victims. The average sentence length for convicted predators is around five years, with many serving less time due to plea bargains or other factors (source: Rainn.org). This is unacceptable considering the lifelong trauma inflicted upon victims.

We need stricter laws that impose longer sentences and harsher penalties on sexual predators, especially repeat offenders like my abuser. We must ensure that these criminals are kept away from potential victims as long as possible, providing some semblance of safety and justice for those affected by their actions.

This petition calls on lawmakers to review existing legislation related to sexual crimes, particularly those involving minors, with an aim towards strengthening them significantly. It's time we prioritize victim rights over predator leniency.
