My personal journey, though painful, compels me to start this petition. As a survivor of childhood sexual assault involving an innocent animal participant, I realize there is a glaring issue which receives minimal attention and even less understanding in our society. It is, tragically, a much more common occurrence than what people imagine, characterized by its invisibility and society's reluctance to acknowledge its existence.

A part of our society's alarming inaction may be the lack of clear and enforceable legislation. Current laws offer minimal protection for victims of sex crimes involving animals, with  no custodial punishment for such offenders. Perpetrators who coerce children into performing sexual acts, including oral, with animals, are allowed to slip through the legal cracks, inflicting irreversible trauma without facing just repercussions.

The need for comprehensive, enforceable legislation is all the more pressing. Such laws would not only punish the perpetrators, but also deter potential offenders, and most importantly, provide recognition, support and a path towards justice for survivors.

Many of us find it uncomfortable to discuss – let alone confront – this problem, but our collective silence will only perpetuate the cycle of abuse. It is vital that we rise above our discomfort to tackle this crime head on.

I urge the lawmakers and concerned citizens to acknowledge the commonness, severity and damaging long-lasting effects of such abuse.
