Strengthen Flood Prevention in the Philippines

Strengthen Flood Prevention in the Philippines
The Issue
Introduction
Multiple times a year, our country experiences strong rainfall which causes intense flooding. This is due to poor drainage systems and immensely polluted streets. As a result, many students from different parts of the country lose valuable time at school for learning and have to suffer with the health consequences of water-borne diseases from flood water. As a concerned student and citizen of the Philippines, I call on local and national governments to act upon the country's flooding issue.
Background of the Issue
Flooding has long been a persistent problem in the Philippines, costing countless lives, damaging properties, and disrupting daily activities for millions of Filipinos. The primary cause of this recurrent problem is largely due to the outdated and inefficient drainage systems that fail to cope with the heavy downpours common in our tropical country. Additionally, the lack of maintenance and the constant pollution of our streets worsen the situation, leading to blocked waterways that exacerbate flooding.
According to the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC), flooding in the Philippines affects over a million individuals annually, disrupting education, health services, and livelihoods. The vulnerability to water-borne diseases like leptospirosis and cholera increases significantly during these times, posing severe health threats especially to children.
Decision Makers
The government, at both local and national levels, must prioritize the modernization and expansion of flood prevention and drainage infrastructure. This includes the installation of state-of-the-art drainage systems, regular maintenance of existing systems, and stringent enforcement of regulations against pollution. Collaborative efforts with environmental scientists, urban planners, and local communities are also essential in creating a sustainable plan.
Why is your support needed?
By signing this petition, you will help urge the leaders and concerned agencies to take necessary actions to strengthen our flood defense systems and protect the lives and futures of Filipinos. Let’s come together to make our communities safer and more resilient against the challenges posed by climate change and urbanization. Sign now to be a part of this crucial initiative for change!
