The Issue

In Boyd County, Kentucky, a tragic case of equine neglect unfolded before our eyes. For months, reports of starving horses were filed with local authorities and went unanswered. The delay in action led to the loss of more than eight precious lives. Over 50 horses were left to languish in dire conditions until social media outrage finally compelled a response.

Yet, despite the severity of the situation, the individual responsible faced only a Class A misdemeanor, the harshest punishment under Kentucky's current livestock abuse laws. This is woefully inadequate and a grave injustice to the animals that suffered needlessly. Kentucky’s equine welfare laws must be strengthened to prevent such heinous acts of neglect from happening again.

Kentucky is known for its horse racing heritage, but we must also be known for our commitment to the humane treatment of these magnificent creatures. That's why we're calling on Kentucky lawmakers to reclassify animal abuse as a felony. This change would reflect the seriousness of such crimes and serve as a powerful deterrent to future offenders.

Strengthening our equine welfare laws would not only protect horses but also send a clear message that Kentucky values the welfare of all its animals. We can’t allow complacency in our legal system to shield abusers. We must ensure that authorities are held accountable and responsive to reports of animal neglect and cruelty.

Join us in urging the Kentucky state legislature to take decisive action. The lives of countless animals depend on it, and we need your support to make this change happen. Stand with us in demanding justice for these horses and ensuring a safer environment for all animals in Kentucky.

Please sign this petition to make equine welfare laws stricter in Kentucky and help elevate animal abuse to a felony offense. Together, we can make a difference.
