The Issue

Animal poaching is a cause that resonates deeply with me. The wellbeing and welfare of animals, especially those on the brink of extinction, are of paramount importance. I've always felt a deep connection to wildlife, particularly big cats, which are some of my favorite animals. Learning that these magnificent creatures, along with many other mesmerizing species, are being driven to extinction due to poaching is heart-wrenching.

Sri Lanka is home to a diverse array of wildlife, including many endangered species. These animals are not only a vital part of our biodiversity but also a significant draw for tourism, which supports the economy. However, poaching remains a severe threat as it decimates populations of these precious creatures, including elephants, leopards, and marine species. According to recent reports, thousands of animals fall victim to poaching each year in Sri Lanka, reducing their populations drastically and pushing them closer to the edge of extinction.

The current laws and enforcement measures, while present, are insufficient to deter poachers who exploit these animals for profit. These criminal activities not only endanger animal populations but also threaten the ecological balance and the rich natural heritage of Sri Lanka. A strengthened legal framework with more severe penalties and increased enforcement could serve as a powerful deterrent against poaching.

I urge the Sri Lankan government to take decisive action by revising and reinforcing existing anti-poaching laws, increasing patrol and surveillance in vulnerable areas, and enhancing the capabilities and resources available to wildlife protection agencies. By implementing these changes, we can safeguard our country's natural treasures and preserve them for future generations.

Sign this petition to help protect Sri Lanka’s wildlife from the threat of poaching. Let's be the voice for those who cannot speak for themselves and ensure that these incredible creatures continue to roam our lands freely and safely.
