The Issue

I've always had a keen sense of connection with the animals around me. It breaks my heart to see livestock, creatures that sustain our livelihoods, left vulnerable without any form of shelter. Too often, I've witnessed the heartbreaking sight of cattle, horses and other animals standing in the harsh sun, torrential rain, or biting cold, with no relief or protection. These creatures deserve better.

Our current animal protection laws fall short. While there are numerous regulations for companion animals, livestock seem to slip through the cracks of legislative care. According to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA), livestock animals are subject to less stringent protection standards compared to pets like cats or dogs. In the United States, only 13 states have any legislation concerning livestock welfare, and even fewer enforce minimum standards for shelter.

Protecting livestock isn’t just a moral obligation; it’s also a step towards a more humane and sustainable agricultural industry. Animals not only suffer physically but are also subject to stress, which can affect their health, leading to broader agricultural inefficiencies. Stress in livestock can lead to lower reproduction rates, increased susceptibility to disease, and even a decrease in product quality which many farmers rely on.

We need comprehensive and enforceable legislation that ensures all livestock are provided with essential necessities, such as adequate shelter, access to clean water, and a healthy living environment that promotes their wellbeing. For example, mandating shaded areas for grazing cattle and weatherproof structures for housing during inclement weather would drastically improve their living conditions and overall health.

Every life deserves respect and dignity, whether they provide company or sustenance. By signing this petition, you're voicing a commitment to advocate for those who can't speak for themselves, urging lawmakers to take livestock welfare seriously. Together, let's pave the way for stronger animal protection laws that safeguard the livelihood and dignity of these invaluable creatures. Sign the petition to be a part of this critical movement for change.
