Strengthen Animal Cruelty Laws in North Carolina Now

The Issue

In November 2025, authorities in Nash County, North Carolina, discovered a horrific case of neglect and abuse. Inside a mobile home, deputies found numerous dead animals, many believed to have starved to death. Survivors included a single malnourished dog and a 9-year-old girl who was also severely neglected and living in filth.

The woman charged, now facing felony counts of animal cruelty and child neglect, allegedly let this abuse continue for years. Investigators believe more arrests may follow.

This is one of the most disturbing cruelty cases in recent North Carolina history, but sadly, it is not isolated.

We are calling on the North Carolina General Assembly to immediately introduce and pass legislation that:

  • Increases penalties for large-scale or prolonged animal cruelty cases
  • Ensures felony charges apply when multiple animals are harmed or die under someone’s care
  • Requires longer sentencing minimums for repeat offenders or crimes involving extreme neglect

When someone starves dozens of animals, the law should treat that with the seriousness it deserves. But right now, too many cruelty cases result in light penalties or probation, even when the harm is severe.

These animals did not die quickly. They suffered, slowly, over time. And they deserve justice.

Stronger laws will not only hold offenders accountable but also send a clear message that North Carolina will not tolerate systemic abuse.

Sign this petition if you believe North Carolina must strengthen its animal cruelty laws and ensure that those who commit this level of harm face real consequences.
