The Issue

I am writing to you from a place of profound pain and heartbreak. My life and family were torn apart when a criminal stole my precious two cats and abandoned them somewhere in the city of Grand Junction. I have spent countless hours over the last several months searching for them, to no avail. Yet, when I turned to the authorities for help, the response was nothing short of disheartening. The police, whom I trusted to uphold justice and offer assistance, treated me cruelly and unprofessionally, showcasing a shocking lack of intelligence and a complete disregard for our existing laws against animal abuse.

Animal cruelty is a grave issue, one that transcends mere property crime. It affects families, individuals, communities, and in this case, my own mental and emotional well-being. In Grand Junction, cases of pets being stolen, abused, and abandoned have occurred far too often with little to no recourse. Domestic and feral animals alike suffer needlessly at the hands of perpetrators who face little accountability. The current situation is frustrating and unacceptable.

We need the Grand Junction City Council to take immediate and decisive action to strengthen our local laws against animal cruelty. By doing so, we can ensure perpetrators are properly punished and deter potential offenders. Here are some actions the council could consider:

1. Increase the penalties for crimes related to animal cruelty, including significant fines and mandatory jail time.
2. Implement a city-wide task force dedicated to dealing with animal cruelty cases, providing the necessary training and resources for law enforcement personnel.
3. Create a public registry for those convicted of animal cruelty, helping to prevent further crimes.
4. Work with local animal shelters and rescue organizations to develop programs aimed at education, prevention, and the safe recovery and rehoming of affected animals.

This is not just about my beloved cats but about setting a precedent that we care for all our community's animals, whether they have a home or are part of our feral populations.

I urge the members of the Grand Junction community to come together, stand up for our animal friends, and demand that our city council takes a solid and compassionate stand against cruelty.

Please, sign this petition to help us bring about the necessary changes to our legal framework and send a powerful message that animal cruelty has no place in Grand Junction.
