Stop the demolition of RAF Driffield and commence refurbishment.
The Issue
During July 2014 I got the chance to finally visit the disused part of RAF Driffield which is connected to the Driffield Cadet Training Centre. After seeing the state of the site i became upset to find out that the site is planned to be demolished in way for 500 new homes but after owning the site since around 2004-present the site has only had a few buildings demolished (including the officers mess) if the base were to be preserved it could open up new opportunities such as transforming the accommodation into flats and the old "Drifft Inn" NAAFI and bar could be restored into its former glory. there is also a lot of opportunities for young people to get involved with the local Air Cadets and Army Cadets. Personally i am a cadet at the local 873 (Driffield) squadron of the air cadets and i think this would be a great chance for people to live somewhere nice or even just visit in East Yorkshire. i have many people already backing my point, where i live and in Driffield itself. The work may have to be done by volunteers (myself included) and this would give the community a lot of chances to get out and help in something really big for Driffield. If enough signatures can be generated Driffield could have another thing to say for itself. Don’t let just another housing estate be built, restore the heritage of RAF Driffield. Royal Air Force Station Driffield is crucial to the local areas heritage and opportunities. During its lifetime the air force base has provided many people with home and work so why demolish it? Strawsons Property has planned to start demolition for a long time now but not much has happened. The amount of opportunities that would be available is shocking. The sports centre could be renovated and along with the NAAFI and bar (Drifft Inn) the site would create many recreational places. Also an air museum could be built in place of the demolished officer’s mess. My final idea is that all of the accommodation blocks could be restored into flats and shops, also the officers housing could be restored to provide a first house for many people. so stop the demolition before it really goes underway and save our heritage.
