Strava: Do Not Delete FATMAP! Backcountry Safety at Risk

The Issue

UPDATE: More details in this YouTube video... Please share!!  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZeicMyvMnUE&t=68s

Strava is planning to retire FATMAP, leaving the winter backcountry community in limbo. Despite announcing that some features would be integrated, Strava has yet to address the concerns of tens of thousands of users. With the October 1st, 2024 deadline fast approaching, we are worried about losing critical functionalities including winter satellite imagery, live snow depth, community data and avalanche slope color grading—features essential for safe navigation in mountainous winter terrain.

The potential loss of these tools could result in an increase in avalanche-related injuries and fatalities, as planning safe routes will become more difficult.  FATMAP’s functionality is unmatched by other mapping software like Gaia GPS, CalTopo, or even Strava itself so there is no comparable alternative.

The winter backcountry community, including skiers, snowshoers, sledders, and mountaineers, is unified in asking Strava, “Could you not just leave FATMAP alone?” Strava has not clearly communicated which functionalities will transfer, and this lack of transparency is unacceptable. This situation is damaging Strava’s reputation among loyal users.

Please sign this petition and contact Strava to save our beloved winter backcountry navigational software. FATMAP is universally loved and trusted, and losing it would severely impact our ability to plan safe backcountry travel. We are facing the loss of this invaluable resource on October 1st, 2024—now is the time to make your voice heard. Let Strava know that this is unacceptable and that their customers deserve better!

Contact strava on their social media or using the link below EDIT: They have been deleting relevant comments and questions! to express your dissatisfaction regarding this issue.  As a large faceless tech corporation they are hard to reach - likely by design.

Strava is actively attempting to silence this petition and banned me from the community hub just for posting it there.  They have not responded despite me reaching out in multiple ways for a week.  They are deleting relevant comments from the community hub.  This is no way to treat your customers!
