MAX. ONE-WAY BARGE FARE $75 FOR ALL VISITORS TO STRADDIE

The issue

For years Straddie has missed out on many potential visitors because they could not afford the barge fare, including the last fare $149 return. We agree with Stradbroke Ferries introducing a flexible fare structure with fares cheaper than $75 one-way to encourage more visitors to Straddie. But fares of $85 and $95 one-way or more than $150 return at peak visitation times will prevent potential visitors who don't have the flexibility to travel at non-peak times and take advantage of cheaper fares. We believe that the maximum one-way fare in any flexible fare structure should be $75 to avoid losing visitors to other destinations. We cannot afford anything that discourages visitation to Straddie as sand mining is phased out and the Island becomes more dependent on tourism.
