Stop YouTube’s August 13th 2025 Plan to Use AI to Misjudge Your Age and Force ID Uploads

The Issue

This new YouTube policy—set to launch on August 13, 2025—will use AI to guess whether a user is a minor based on what they watch and how they behave. This invasive system violates user privacy by analyzing viewing habits and, if a user is mislabeled as underage, forces them to provide sensitive documents—such as an ID card, driver’s license, credit card, or even a selfie—to continue accessing certain videos. Millions of adults who enjoy family-friendly or nostalgic content like Minecraft gameplay, Bluey episodes, or childhood cartoons, are at risk of being wrongly labeled as minors and locked out of certain videos unless they submit personal identification.

This policy risks falsely labeling millions of adult users as minors simply based on their viewing preferences and behavior, turning innocent viewers into targets of privacy violations. Users’ freedom to watch certain content will be restricted unless they provide sensitive personal data. Moreover, popular creators may suffer loss of viewers and revenue if their audience is inaccurately classified as underage. While protecting kids and teens online is important, YouTube’s reliance on flawed AI profiling and forced ID verification does more harm than good.Instead of this intrusive approach, YouTube should adopt privacy-respecting alternatives like optional, PIN-protected parental controls (which restrict certain content kids and teens watch)—similar to those on Netflix, Disney+, and Max—to empower families without compromising user privacy.

YouTube’s AI age moderation policy is set to take effect on August 13, 2025. If we don’t act now, millions of users will be subject to constant monitoring, false age profiling, and forced to hand over private information just to watch the content they love.  This policy sets a dangerous precedent for mass surveillance, privacy erosion, and the restriction of online freedom. It is dystopian, unnecessary, and fundamentally wrong. We demand YouTube immediately halt this invasive policy and implement respectful, user-managed safety tools instead. YouTube must prioritize user privacy, protect its community, and reject turning a creative platform into a digital surveillance state reminiscent of George Orwell’s 1984. We call on YouTube’s leadership to cancel this policy and implement respectful, user-controlled safety settings instead.
