The Issue

I am a student at Bryan Adams Highschool, and this issue is deeply personal to me. The upcoming policy in our local schools allows for student phones to be locked away for the entire day. This not only disrupts communication but also hinders students' ability to contact their families in case of emergencies.

In today's digital age, smartphones are more than just devices for entertainment; they are essential tools that provide safety and security. According to a study by Pew Research Center, 96% of Americans own a cellphone of some kind and among those, 81% own smartphones (Pew Research Center - Mobile Fact Sheet). These numbers clearly indicate how integral these devices have become in our lives.

The upcoming policy does not consider the potential risks associated with leaving students without their phones for an extended period. In case of emergencies or unexpected situations where IMMEDIATE and not chrome book login steps etc.  contact with family is necessary, this could potentially put students at risk.

We understand that phone usage should be controlled during school hours to maintain focus on education and we are willing to put phones in pouches during class time . However, completely confiscating them all day seems excessive and disregards their role as crucial communication tools.

Therefore, we urge the school authorities and admins in Bryan Adams  to revise this policy and limit its scope while still maintaining an environment conducive to learning. Please sign this petition if you believe in safeguarding our children's right to quick access for emergency contacting while at school.
