This is so amazing, I’m not really sure how to thank you all. So I thought I’d give you a little update on where we are instead… The past week has all been a bit of whirlwind. Since the petition took off, I’ve been trying to do as much as possible to keep the momentum going! I’d really like to thank all the journalists who’ve shown their interest and support. This has included many great Windsor-based journalists, but also filming a TV interview for ITV meridian and speaking live to Clive Bull on LBC radio. What is more, our petition appeared in The Mirror the Wikitribune and we were even on the BBC homepage on Wednesday! http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-berkshire-42618958 None of this would have happened without you guys! I’ve also been in contact with many local and national charities. In fact… the only person who I still haven’t been able to make contact with yet, is Mr Dudley himself. Despite emailing his office, as well as tweeting him, he has yet to respond. Nevertheless, I’ve asked for a meeting so that I can deliver the petition and an open letter to him in person, so I’ll keep you posted. In the meantime, lots of people have been messaging and asking if there are any other ways they can get involved, so I’ve pulled together a couple of things that you could do below (only if inclined of course!) :) THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU! 1. I’ve made a JustGiving page: (It kind of seemed silly not to give people the option of raising money for a cause they care about!) You can find it here: https://www.justgiving.com/fundraising/holly-fishwick Or text: WICK83 £1 to 70070 Any money you donate will go directly to Centrepoint and your details will be completely secure. Trying to decide who to support was honestly a nightmare and I’ve spoken to several charities, all of whom do incredibly inspiring work. I ultimately chose Centrepoint as they’re the the UK's leading charity for homeless young people, and one that Princess Diana was a former patron of, which seemed fitting :) 2. Write to your own councillor / MP and let them know that rough sleeping is an abomination in this day and age and you’re no longer standing for it! You can look up their contact details, and the name of your constituency here: www.gov.uk/find-your-local-councillors www.parliament.uk/mps-lords-and-offices/mps 3. A lovely guy named Sam got in touch and asked if I would share his petition too: https://petition.parliament.uk/petitions/205388 In his appalling comments, Simon Dudley mentioned the Vagrancy Act 1824, suggesting (shockingly and cruelly) that it be used against rough sleepers. This is horrific, but even more horrific is that the Vagrancy Act 1824 does actually make rough sleeping and begging an offence. As long as such legislation is in place, police and policy makers like Simon Dudley will be able to treat rough sleeping as an issue of criminality, with the weight of the law behind them. In recent years, the Vagrancy Act 1824 has been used many times to threaten or arrest rough sleepers. Sam and his friends have launched a campaign to repeal the Vagrancy Act 1824. It is an archaic and barbaric law and has no place in our society. If it is repealed, it would make a big difference to the way police and policy makers are able to treat homeless people. They currently have a petition on the issue, but it has yet to really take off. It currently has 8500 signatures; and if they get to 10,000, then the government must respond, if we get to 100,000, the issue must be debated in Parliament. Reckon we can lend them a hand guys?!
