stop waste incineration
Air pollution kills. It is a simple fact that waste incineration adds to the pollution we all breathe.
Burning rubbish damages our health and the environment. The dioxins that are released get in to in to the soil, water and food chain.
Even if you don’t live close enough to breathe in the poisons directly you could be eating food that has been contaminated.
The toxic emissions cause cancer, birth defects and breathing problems.
Big business cannot dictate local policy.
Waste companies are telling local councils across the country that the only way to deal with our waste is to burn it. They are choosing the most profitable option for them and not what is right for the local community and the country as a whole. There are better ways to treat our rubbish than burning it.
Our health and our green spaces are worth fighting for.
Stop them from polluting the environment for profit. Tell Eric Pickles that he must put health before wealth.
Eric Pickles has already refused planning consent for an incinerator in Cheshire and has called in a similar proposal in Kings Lynn.
He must do more and stop any new waste incinerators from being built.
Together we can make a difference.
- Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government.
Dear Mr Pickles,
As I am sure you are aware, there are a number of waste incinerators planned up and down the country.
Most recently the Mayor's office agreed with Sutton Council to build a mass burn waste incinerator in South London. Not only is this already an Air Quality Management Area because it is highly polluted, it is also being built on Metropolitan Open Land and a Site of Metropolitan Importance for Nature Conservation.
Big business is being allowed to dictate local policy. Waste companies are telling local councils that the only way to deal with our waste problem is to burn it all. For years they have been saying the same thing about landfill.
They are choosing the most profitable option for them and not what is right for the local community and the country as a whole.
It is a simple fact that waste incineration adds to the pollution we all breathe. Everyone agrees we must reduce pollution.
Please do the right thing and stop adding to the pollution problem and stop the building of waste incinerators.
You have already refused planning consent for an incinerator in Cheshire and have called in a similar proposal in Kings Lynn.
You are also tightening up the protection for Green Belt land from the development of waste incinerators.
Whilst this is a step in the right direction, air pollution knows no boundaries. We are all affected by the dangerous emissions regardless of where they are built.
Put a stop to any further waste incinerators being built in this country.
