I make the following comments to Minister Dan Tehan’s response. First, Linda Burney says there are “very important safeguards in place when it comes to veterans”; if that is the case then release the draft Regulations and full in-house Privacy Impact Assessment (PIA) Report undertaken by DVA. Second, your statement that “under the legislation, only the Minister for Veterans’ Affairs can decide what information is released and how it is released” is contradictory to your other statement that “the Secretary of the Department is on the only person who can release information.” Please explain? Thirdly, I note the draft legislation was developed in consultation with the veterans’ community. However, the RSL and Legacy did not make any written submission to the Senate Committee on the bill. Nor did any of these ESOs appear at the Senate Committee hearing last month. I ask the ESOs how the scones and tea are going in Canberra these days with the new caterers? Lastly, failure to release the DVA in-house PIA Report in full together with the draft Regulations denies stakeholders one of the most important aspects of the consultation process. The release of the DVA in-house PIA will only lead to better privacy outcomes. If the bill isn’t a pig than release the draft Regulations and PIA Report. Senator Jacquie Lambie Senator for Tasmania
