Subject: Please Amend Vancouver’s Multiplex Bylaws to Ensure Balanced, Livable Neighbourhoods
Dear Mayor and Council,
My name is [Your Name], and I live in [Your Neighbourhood].
I am writing because I signed the Stop Vancouver’s Multiplex Expansion petition and wanted to share my concerns directly with you.
This blanket approach to planning that prioritizes unit counts above all else is leading to bad outcomes for neighbourhoods across Vancouver.
In particular, I am concerned about:
- loss of mature trees and clearcutting lots
- insufficient design guidelines, no setbacks, tapering, no yards
- huge shadows that mean neighbouring front and back yards don’t get sunlight and gardens and plants can’t grow
- lack of privacy due to massive structures
- impacts on infrastructure like lack of street parking, drainage, laneway congestion
- impacted views and view corridors
I respectfully ask that Council consider amendments to the multiplex zoning that would:
• Protect established tree canopy and require preservation
• Encourage better design integration with existing neighbourhood character and topography, no out of proportion structures
• Address infrastructure limits (e.g., utilities, drainage, street parking)
• Ensure environmental and livability impacts are properly assessed
• Provide more flexibility for neighbourhood-specific planning including preservation of views and view corridors
Adding more homes is important, but it must be done in a way that is sustainable, thoughtful, and respectful of long-standing communities.
Please take into account the significant resident feedback submitted so far, including the many concerns expressed through the petition and media coverage on CTV and CKNW.
Thank you for your time and your service to Vancouver residents.
Sincerely,
[Your Name]
