I am someone who lives with both NPD (Narcissistic Personality Disorder) and ASPD (Antisocial Personality Disorder), and I find the terms "narcissistic abuse" and "sociopathic abuse" not only offensive but also harmful. These labels, born out of pop psychology, are used to demonize individuals with these disorders, creating a stigma that perpetuates misunderstanding and hostility.

If you don't know what pop psychology is, popular (pop) psychology is an umbrella term that covers any psychological ideology, therapy, or other technique that gained popularity through a book, TV show, or blog post. However, pop psychology too often generalizes, oversimplifies, or misinterprets the actual principles that they are based on. Other examples include love languages and "empaths"

It is crucial for society to understand that having NPD or ASPD does not equate to a lack of morality or character. These terms only serve to stigmatize and alienate us further. The notion of "narcissistic abuse" or "sociopathic abuse" simplifies complex human interactions into harmful stereotypes, ignoring the myriad of factors that contribute to abusive behavior.

The abuse people suffer is very real and serious, but attributing it solely to these disorders is misleading and frankly, ableist. We cannot justify hostility and exclusion under the guise of psychological terminology. 

Also empathy is not equivalent to morality. I might not feel for others, but I can recognize when something is bad. Pardon my language, but morality is basic fucking decency, not empathy. 

Regardless of everything, please just sign to help urge people to stop demonizing ASPD and NPD. 

The abuse and trauma is valid. The ableism is not. 

At this point I'd almost argue that "sociopath" and "narcissist" are slurs but that's a topic for another day. 

This petition was born out of my own frustration at my own mother believing in this and also seeing a petition saying to "illegalize narcissistic abuse" as if us narcissists have some kind of special type of abuse when??? We don't??? We just think differently than you do, dude.
