Stop using sound cannons and other loud acoustic devices to scare away birds in Toronto
The Issue
My dog absolutely loves her walks; the fresh air, the open spaces, and the gentle sounds of nature. But recently, our peaceful walks along the beautiful Toronto Lakeshore have turned into a nightmare. Each loud, echoing boom from the sound cannons shatters the tranquility and fills her with terror. Suddenly, she's no longer enjoying her time outdoors; instead, she starts shaking, panting, and drooling, desperate to run home and hide. This is not just about my dog—countless pets and their owners in our neighborhood are suffering from the same distress. Some dogs hide in their basements refusing to go outside at all, others need to be relocated out of the area from March to June, and tragically some will run away only to be lost or hit by a car.
These sound cannons, intended to deter birds from nesting, inadvertently create a cacophony that disrupts the neighborhood's rhythm. It's an unnecessary and cruel practice that affects not only birds but also innocent pets and the local community who cherish the serene environment of the Lakeshore. Birds provide ecological balance and beauty to our city, and there are more humane, effective ways to manage their populations.
The Toronto Lakeshore is a haven, not just for people, but for all creatures. The use of aggressive noise solutions doesn't only terrorize pets but can also harm local wildlife and disrupt natural systems. People who suffer from PTSD from being in the military are also retraumatized from these loud noises that resemble gunshots or explosions. It conflicts with the natural coexistence and community vibe we value in Toronto.
It's time for Toronto's authorities to take action. We call for the immediate cessation and reevaluation of using sound cannons and other loud acoustic devices as a bird deterrent along the Lakeshore. We urge the implementation of alternative, non-invasive methods like habitat modification or relocation, and use of physical barriers or visual deterrents. These solutions not only preserve peace and quality of life for residents and their pets but also ensure the protection and harmony of wildlife in our city.
Let's make the Lakeshore safe and enjoyable for all. Please sign this petition to stop the use of sound cannons and other loud acoustic devices and promote a peaceful environment in Toronto.
