Stop Using Myanmar Court Dress as Thai Costumes in 'Scarlet Heart Thailand'

The Issue

Dear GMMTV, Director Kanittha Kwanyu, and the Production Team,

"Scarlet Heart Thailand" is a highly anticipated upcoming Thai historical fantasy drama series produced by GMMTV and Nar-ra-tor. As it is a fictional fantasy adaptation based on the Chinese novel Startling by Each Step by Tong Hua, creative freedom is fully respected. However, creative freedom should not lead to the erasure or misrepresentation of another country's cultural heritage.

We, the viewers and cultural advocates, are deeply concerned about the costume designs shown in the official teaser and promotional materials. Several outfits worn by the characters are historically and distinctively Myanmar traditional royal court attire from the Konbaung Dynasty (ကုန်းဘောင်ခေတ်). These unique garments are part of Myanmar's distinct cultural identity and have no historical relation to native Thai or Lanna royal traditions.

The characters in this series do not represent Myanmar people or history, yet they are styled in authentic Myanmar court dresses. Presenting these garments as traditional Thai costumes misleads the global audience and appropriates Myanmar’s heritage without proper recognition.

Our Demands to GMMTV and the Production Team:

  1. Immediate Review and Modification: We demand the production team review the costume designs immediately and modify or redesign the specific outfits that appropriate Myanmar court attire to ensure they reflect actual Lanna historical clothing.
  2. Official Public Apology: GMMTV must issue an official public statement apologizing for the cultural misrepresentation and the lack of proper historical research.
  3. Formal Acknowledgement and Screen Credit: If any elements of Myanmar's heritage remain in the final cut, GMMTV must formally acknowledge and include explicit on-screen credit (e.g., in the opening or end credits) stating the influence of Myanmar’s Konbaung Dynasty.
  4. Accurate Marketing and Promotion: Ensure that all future trailers, posters, and promotional materials do not mislabel, appropriate, or present these garments as native Thai traditional clothing.

We urge GMMTV to respect the cultural identity and history of its neighboring country. Let us appreciate culture through accurate recognition, not appropriation.
