Big news for the community and our glyphosate campaign: Dudley Council has voted in favour of a motion to explore banning the use of the pesticide Glyphosate in its parks and open spaces.
What's happening:
The motion, introduced by councillor Andrew Thomas, asks the council's cabinet to consult with local friends-groups of parks and assess the health risks linked to glyphosate, including research suggesting associations with various cancers — especially among children.
While glyphosate is still approved by the Health and Safety Executive, the council has already cut back usage in parks.
• The motion was approved: 37 votes in favour, 14
against, 8 abstentions.
• Why it matters:
Over 80 local authorities in the UK have already either phased out or committed to phasing out glyphosate.
• Residents and pet-owners have raised fears about exposure, including concerns about pets walking through recently sprayed areas.
The move signals growing local momentum toward safer, more sustainable weed-control methods.
What's next:
The council will now review a detailed report and consult park-users.
A full ban is not immediate - the cabinet member
warned alternatives (green/manual removal) could be costly and complex. We therefore need more signatures to get put more pressure on the council. Please share the petition to your email contacts and follow us @friendsoftheearthstourbridge on instagram
