STOP UNSAFE HIGH RISE HOUSING DEVELOPMENT ON CONTAMINATED FOUNDRY LAND IN GENEVA!

The Issue

Stop the unsafe High-Rise Development on Jackson Street in Geneva, NY! Protect Our Community and Environment!

We, the concerned residents of Geneva, NY, strongly oppose the proposed high-rise development on Jackson Street, which is planned for the site of the former Geneva Foundry, a historically contaminated brownfield. This project is not only a direct contradiction to Geneva’s Comprehensive Plan but also poses serious environmental, health, and community concerns.

Environmental & Health Risks

The former Geneva Foundry site was heavily contaminated with lead and arsenic, posing significant health risks to residents. In 2017, the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (NYSDEC) and Department of Health (NYSDOH) conducted extensive soil remediation in surrounding neighborhoods, removing and replacing contaminated soil in hundreds of properties. Despite these efforts, residual contamination concerns remain, making it highly inappropriate for a high-density residential development.

Violates Geneva’s Comprehensive Plan

Geneva’s Comprehensive Plan emphasizes responsible development that enhances community well-being and aligns with environmental sustainability. A high-rise on this site:

 • Disrupts neighborhood character: The scale and density of the development do not fit with Geneva’s small-city charm and historic landscape.

 • Ignores environmental considerations: Building on a brownfield site that has undergone remediation does not guarantee complete safety, particularly if excavation disturbs remaining contamination.

 • Strains infrastructure: Increased population density will place added stress on local roads, utilities, and public services without clear plans for mitigation.

A Call for Responsible Development

We support development that prioritizes safety, environmental responsibility, and alignment with Geneva’s long-term vision. We urge city officials, the planning board, and developers to reconsider this project and explore alternatives that truly serve our community’s best interests.
