“I could have lost my daughter at that moment. That’s why I think change for the rules there is just something that’s so important. Because next time, it can be somebody else's child that does lose their life.”
— Vanessa Chamberlain, whose 4-year-old daughter was struck by an e-bike at Sunset Dunes Park (CBS News Story)

Greetings Supporters,

I am reaching out today with a renewed sense of urgency and resolve. A heartbreaking incident, and Vanessa’s emotional plea, underscore the critical need for immediate and comprehensive safety improvements at Sunset Dunes Park.

What Happened
On August 9, Vanessa Chamberlain and her young daughter visited the park for the first time. Within just five minutes, a man riding an e-bike collided with her 4-year-old daughter, sending her “flying.” The child sustained head cuts, bruises, and road rash, miraculously, with no lasting injuries.

Vanessa poignantly remarked, "I could have lost my daughter at that moment… next time, it can be somebody else's child that does lose their life."

How the City Responded
In the wake of this and other incidents, city agencies announced changes: a dual-zone layout (family zone vs. multi-use zone), new signs and pavement markings, and limited SFPD spot enforcement on e-bikes and scooters. While these steps are welcome, they fall short of the protections needed to truly keep children, the elderly, the disabled and families safe.

What We’re Asking
The changes announced by Rec & Park are only a subset of what this petition has been calling for all along. We continue to demand:

  • Enforcement of a full ban on e-bikes, e-scooters, and other motorized devices in family and pedestrian zones.
  • Clear and permanent physical separation between walking/family areas and faster bike/e-vehicle lanes, not just signs or paint.
  • Dedicated ranger or staff presence to educate, monitor, and intervene when unsafe behavior occurs.
  • Accountability and transparency from city leaders to ensure safety remains the top priority in this shared public space.

Vanessa’s story shows how close we already came to tragedy. The city must do more than paint stencils, it must act decisively to protect children and pedestrians before another accident occurs.

And let’s be clear: the Mayor is ultimately responsible for ensuring Sunset Dunes Park is safe. The safety of our children should never be compromised by half-measures.
