Stop Unnecessary Euthanasia of Shelter Animals Without Proper Profiling

The Issue

Every year, millions of cats and dogs are euthanized in animal shelters without proper profiling for adoption or fostering. These animals are often euthanized due to factors such as not being spayed or neutered, behavioural problems stemming from their stressful environment, or simply because they are old. It is undeniable that these animals deserve the chance to live out their lives to the fullest.

The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) reports that approximately 1.5 million shelter animals are euthanized each year. Of these, 670,000 are dogs and 860,000 are cats. These shocking statistics highlight the urgent need for animal shelters to reassess their policies and practices concerning euthanasia.

There is a growing consensus within the animal welfare community that euthanasia should be a last resort, only employed when an animal is suffering and has a poor quality of life. Yet many shelters are still euthanizing healthy animals, often due to a lack of resources for proper profiling, care and foster/adoption outreach.

We call upon all animal shelters to reconsider their euthanasia policies and invest in proper profiling, behavioural support, and community engagement to increase adoption and fostering rates. By doing this, we can ensure that all shelter animals have the chance to lead a healthy, happy life. Please, sign this petition to give our animals the chance they deserve.
