The Issue
I want to share my personal story that highlights a troubling issue within the Department of Child Services, one that has affected me deeply. My children were removed due to allegations involving one of my oldest allegedly possessing a gun. However, it was later discovered that it was not my child who was involved. Despite this revelation, all my children were removed from my care, and no efforts were made to rectify this unjust situation.
The removal of children from their families should be a last resort and should only occur when all other avenues have been thoroughly explored and exhausted. Too often, families like mine are torn apart based on unproven allegations, without sufficient effort to provide support and resources to help resolve issues while keeping children with their families.
Statistics show that children who remain in their homes, when it is safe to do so, often fare better in terms of mental health and long-term development compared to those who are placed in foster care. Additionally, a significant number of removals are based on circumstances that could have been addressed with proper social services support, rather than removal and separation.
We are calling on the Department of Child Services to reconsider their policies and practices around child removal. We demand that they prioritize family reunification and provide families with the support they need to address difficulties. This includes offering counseling, financial aid, parenting classes, and community support programs where needed, before taking the drastic step of removing children from their homes.
Join us in urging the Department of Child Services to implement fair and just procedures that are in the best interest of children and families. Let's advocate for policies that emphasize support over separation, and ensure that no child is removed from their home without exhaustive efforts to help the family stay together.
Sign this petition to make your voice heard and help ensure families like mine are given a fair opportunity to stay together.
