I am a member of Unite Union, and I am deeply concerned about the use of my union membership fees to support lobbying efforts for increased fossil fuel extraction in the North Sea. This isn't just a matter of union policy; it's personal. All of our families' future is directly tied to the health of our planet, and continuing to support fossil fuel projects endangers that future.

Climate change is one of the most critical challenges of our time, and the continued extraction and burning of fossil fuels are major contributors to global warming. According to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), to limit global warming to 1.5°C, global CO2 emissions need to decline by about 45% by 2030, reaching net zero around 2050. Expanding fossil fuel extraction directly contradicts these goals and undermines global efforts to combat climate change.

The North Sea has historically been a significant site for fossil fuel extraction in the UK, but it's time to pivot to sustainable and renewable energy sources. Investing in renewable energy not only has the potential to provide long-term, sustainable jobs for the future but also aligns with our commitment to a cleaner, greener planet.

I urge Unite Union to reconsider its stance and redirect its lobbying efforts towards promoting sustainable energy initiatives rather than fossil fuel extraction. By doing so, they will be supporting the interests of their members and protecting the future of our planet.
