Stop Unfair Towing Practices in Panther Hill Apartments

The Issue

I am a student living off-campus, and recently, I experienced an event that shone a light on the need for change in our current towing policies. Late one night, after parking my new car, it was towed by the Reflections Auto Body. Despite being a victim of a traumatic incident, the complex wanted me to walk from the distant visitor's lot alone in the dark. I had to pay $321 to retrieve my car, money that was all I had left for food and my phone bill.

Texas Department of Licensing and Registrations states:

“Pay all fees for towing and storage: The TOW CHARGE: The maximum charge for a private property tow is:$272 for a vehicle weighing up to 10,000 lbs
$380 for a vehicle weighing more than 10,000 but less than 25,000 lbs
$489 per unit for unit for vehicles weighing more than 25,000 lbs with a $978 total maximum”

Reflections Auto Body in Waller, Texas charges $320+ for any car that is towed, which by Texas law is, illegal.

This is not just my issue. Predatory towing practices are rampant in college off-campus housing complexes across the country, taking advantage of financially disadvantaged students. According to the Federal Trade Commission, the number of complaints about predatory towing has increased by 20% in the last five years. These practices seem to disproportionately affect students who are already struggling financially, turning parking into an anxiety-inducing and costly gamble.

This egregious trend of exploiting students' vulnerabilities must stop. We are urging property managements and local authorities to regulate towing in off-campus housings better, protecting our rights and promoting a safer, less stressful environment for residents. Implementing clear signage, warning tags, and fair pricing is the least they can do for us.

Let's put an end to these predatory practices. Sign the petition to demand fair towing policies in off-campus housing complexes for students. Your signature can help us protect the rights and ease the financial burden of students everywhere.
