The I-64 express lanes in Chesapeake, VA are becoming increasingly unaffordable for the average driver. The spirit of our road network is to facilitate mobility and economic activity, yet with the rates currently imposed on the I-64 express lanes, this accessibility is being compromised. Excessive toll charges create a financial burden on daily commuters, forcing many to reconsider their choice of route or even travel at all. It’s essential that these express lanes remain accessible to everyone, regardless of income level.

A recent study highlighted that over 60% of local commuters are seriously affected by these tolls, with some reporting a monthly toll expense that rivals their utility bills. This disproportionate toll fee not only affects individual citizens but also has broader economic implications, discouraging tourism and local business patronage due to unpredictable travel costs.

A realistic and fair pricing strategy is necessary to ensure that the I-64 express lanes serve their intended purpose of facilitating swift and efficient transportation. We call on the Chesapeake Department of Transportation to conduct a comprehensive review of the current tolling system. We urge the adoption of a fair system that does not "price gauge" during situations such as accidents and unusually heavy traffic. It seems greedy to take advantage of someone's hardship (car accident) by increasing the rate to use the express lane. Moreover, sometimes they increase the cost to deter people from using the express lane when there is an accident. Instead of increasing the cost, they could use the electronic boards to alert the incoming traffic and let the drivers know that there is an accident in the express lane or any traffic that exists in real time in the express lane.

Our community deserves an equitable solution that balances the need for infrastructure funding with the financial reality of its residents. Ensuring fair toll practices will not only improve daily commutes but also enhance the overall economic welfare of Chesapeake and its surrounding areas. By limiting the number of cars going through this lane, the express lane is creating more congestion in the other lanes. We already pay so much on taxes and we all went through the hardships and inconvenience during all the construction that was ongoing on 64,and instead of being rewarded , those of us who are not able to carpool are faced with having to decide between sitting in more traffic than we did before, and paying a fee we cannot afford.
