Stop unethical breeding for aesthetics
The Issue
I’ve recently come to understand the dark underside of animal breeding, especially after learning about the Maine Coon cats and other breeds. On the surface, these creatures appear majestic, and the practice seems harmless. However, the sad reality is that many breeding practices prioritize aesthetics over the health and well-being of these animals, like it’s an accepted form of animal abuse.
Consider for a moment how you would feel if you were one of these animals. It’s easy to overlook these beings as just pets, but they are living organisms much like us. Just because they may not hold the same spot in our hearts as our family members doesn’t mean they deserve to be treated as commodities.
The practice of breeding animals solely for their physical appearance often comes at a grave cost to their health. For example, many Maine Coons suffer from hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, a heart condition that leads to a shortened lifespan, because of selective breeding to achieve certain physical traits. This is not an isolated case; French Bulldogs, for instance, frequently endure respiratory issues because of their flat faces, while Dachshunds often suffer from spinal problems due to their elongated bodies.
We need to address this issue and call for regulations to ensure breeding is aimed only at correcting health issues that have arisen from previous unethical practices rather than perpetuating them for aesthetic purposes. We must hold breeders accountable, making it illegal to prioritize aesthetics over health. With proper legislation, breeders will be incentivized to practice ethical breeding, eventually enhancing the quality of life for countless animals.
I am urging policymakers to investigate and restrain these irresponsible forms of breeding once and for all. Together, we can create a system that respects these living creatures as more than just accessories.
