The Issue

Stop Unchecked HMOs Long Eaton

Family homes in Long Eaton are being lost to Houses in Multiple Occupation (HMOs) in which shared houses can have up to six unrelated tenants  living. At the moment, landlords can convert any family home into a small HMO without needing full planning permission.

This is causing real problems in residential streets in our town such as:

-More cars competing for already limited parking spaces

-Extra noise and late-night disturbances from high turnover of tenants

-Increased rubbish and overflowing bins

-Antisocial behaviour linked to poorly managed properties and poorly behaved tenants

The steady loss of family homes in family orientated areas and streets.

We, the residents of Long Eaton, call on Erewash Borough Council to introduce an Article 4 Direction for our town.

An Article 4 Direction would not ban HMOs, but it would:

- Remove landlords’ automatic rights to convert houses without scrutiny

- Require all future HMO proposals to go through full planning permission

- Give existing  residents a proper say before their streets are affected

- Protect family housing and keep communities balanced

- Ensure HMOs are properly regulated so tenants aren’t left vulnerable to rogue landlords

- Give the council more control to manage housing quality and prevent over concentration

As a councillor for Long Eaton, one of the biggest issues residents regularly contact me about is the disruption caused to our streets by HMOs. I hear the same concerns again and again: disruptive tenants, antisocial behaviour, overflowing rubbish, late-night noise, and constant parking problems.

These are not isolated complaints, they are consistent, and they are growing. That’s why I believe we need an Article 4 Direction, so every new HMO is properly considered and residents finally get a voice.

We urge Erewash Borough Council to act now and bring in Article 4 protection for Long Eaton before more family homes are lost.
