Stop Uber’s Predatory Pricing in Chicago

Stop Uber’s Predatory Pricing in Chicago

The Issue

Getting around Chicago shouldn’t feel like being held hostage. But lately, that’s exactly what it’s become. Uber rides that once cost $15 are now surging to $45, $60, or more—even for short distances. It’s not just frustrating. It’s predatory.

Surge pricing has gone from an occasional inconvenience to a daily reality, especially during commute hours, late nights, and bad weather—basically, whenever people need a ride the most. And with CTA delays and service cuts becoming the norm, more people are turning to Uber as their only option. That’s when they’re hit hardest.

It’s a dangerous cycle: people who can’t afford to live near downtown, can’t rely on public transit, and can’t drive are being forced to pay outrageous amounts just to get to work, school, or a doctor’s appointment. This is what transportation inequality looks like—and it’s getting worse.

On top of the surge pricing, Uber was recently caught charging riders an unauthorized $1.50 “congestion fee” outside of legal hours—without notifying the city or even their own drivers. While passengers were unknowingly overpaying, drivers say they didn't see any of that money. The company profits. Riders suffer. And drivers are stuck in the middle.

We can’t let this continue. It’s time for the City of Chicago to step in—to investigate Uber’s pricing practices, demand refunds for illegal fees, and create real protections for both riders and drivers. Because when getting around your city becomes a luxury, it’s the most vulnerable people who pay the price.

If you believe in fair fares, honest work, and a city that doesn’t exploit its own residents, sign this petition.

Let’s demand better—before this becomes the new normal.
