STOP TURTLE CRUSHING IN NORTH CAROLINA
Turtles are trying to get from one pond to another across W. Manchester by Ft. Bragg. They are getting crushed by cars that are driving too fast along this stretch of road, not bothering or unable to stop for the turtles.
If the signs are there, it will show that the government values the lives of the turtles; it alerts the caring public to the fact that turtles may be crossing so they should slow down; it will alert other drivers that cars may slow down in the area or even stop or swerve.
In other words, it becomes a safer area for drivers and riders, as well as turtles.
Please sign my petition asking NC Department of Transportation to put up signs.

We are urging the government of NC to make the right decision for its precious turtles. Too many have been killed along Manchester Road at the point where it cuts between two ponds. We have reported this to Mr. Kent Langdon who oversees that stretch of road, and have urged him to put up the signs, but he has refused to do so, saying that he does not see a problem for drivers there. Obviously, the problem is primarily for the turtles, a concern that Mr. Langdon doesn't share. It has further been pointed out to him that cars slowing down on their own, without notice posted to all drivers, pose a greater threat than if drivers are requested to slow down. It removes a surprise factor. The main problem, however, is that many turtles have been and are being crushed there. Turtle crossing signs would warn drivers to slow down for turtles. Although Mr. Langdon said he has taken a look at the situation and does not believe there is a problem, the people who work there and observe turtles being killed quite often are asking that the signs please be put up. Although there may not have been a human injury or fatality YET, surely it is an accident waiting to happen as some cars will swerve to avoid hitting a turtle.
We are asking for something quite simple to show that NC cares about its wildlife and drivers; putting up turtle crossing signs will help both turtles and drivers.
