Stop Turning Point from entering Indiana schools
The Issue
As an educator responsible for the welfare of more than 1,000 students, I am gravely concerned about the potential impact of allowing Turning Point, an organization led by a controversial figure, access to schools across Indiana. The person at the helm of this organization has a troubling history, having been involved in a human trafficking scandal that forced them to leave their previous country. This background presents a serious threat to the safety and well-being of our students.
Schools are sanctuaries for learning and development, protected spaces where young minds should grow free from the shadow of illicit activities. Having Turning Point in our educational institutions undermines this principle. The organization's supposed educational motives are severely overshadowed by the deeply unethical past actions of its leadership, actions that are well-documented and have been the subject of law enforcement interventions.
We must prioritize the security and moral integrity of our children's learning environments. By allowing leaders of questionable repute into schools, we are exposing our students to potential harm and increasing the risk of inappropriate influences. Given that schools are where students form their understanding of the world, this is not a risk we should take lightly.
Indiana has the opportunity to set a precedent by conducting thorough background checks on organizations before they are granted access to educational settings. Introducing stricter guidelines and enforcing comprehensive vetting processes will ensure that no organization with a history of criminal or unethical actions can engage with our students.
This petition aims to prompt the Indiana Department of Education and local school boards to review and revise their policies on external partnerships in a manner that safeguards our students from undue risk.
