The Issue

President Trump just signed an executive order that tells the Department of the Interior to figure out whether gray wolves still need Endangered Species Act protections, while ordering that agency, in the same breath, to start delisting them anyway. That's not a real review. It's a predetermined outcome dressed up as science.

Gray wolves aren't just another animal on a list. They're apex predators that keep deer and elk populations in check, which protects forests and streams from being overgrazed. They even help slow the spread of chronic wasting disease by taking out sick animals before it spreads further. Losing that role doesn't just hurt wolves. It destabilizes the ecosystems around them.

We've watched this play out before. When wolves lost federal protection in 2020, Wisconsin opened a hunt that blew past its quota in two days. Courts eventually restored protections after finding the delisting was never legally justified in the first place. But the damage to wolf populations in that window couldn't be undone.

"The order is transparently disingenuous on its face," said Wayne Pacelle, president of Animal Wellness Action, according to the organization's statement. He's right. Wildlife policy shouldn't bend to election-year politics timed to a shrinking anti-wolf voter base.

Interior should conduct an honest, science-based review of wolf recovery, not one where the conclusion is written before the study even starts. Sign the petition to demand Interior withdraw the delisting directive and let real science decide the future of America's wolves.
