Stop Trump's plan to slaughter wild horses
The Issue
I was heartbroken to learn about plans that threaten the very survival of America's iconic wild horses. Across our majestic landscapes, from the rolling prairies to the dusty desert plains, wild horses symbolize the spirit of freedom and the natural beauty of our country. Yet, they are in grave danger of being systematically slaughtered due to directives under the current administration led by President Trump.
The justifications provided for this plan are deeply troubling. The administration claims there are too many wild horses, and that holding pens, where they would ideally be kept, are too costly. But are these valid reasons to carry out the wholesale killing of millions of innocent horses? Absolutely not. These animals have roamed our lands for centuries, contributing to the ecological balance of our environment while also enriching our cultural heritage.
The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) estimates there are around 90,000 wild horses and burros on public lands today, which they argue exceeds the sustainable amount by over 40,000. However, independent research has suggested that the current population may not even be high enough to maintain genetic viability, let alone cause environmental devastation. In comparison, livestock grazing on public lands far exceeds 1 million, consuming vast resources and causing damage to the ecosystem that far outweighs any impact from the wild horses.
Instead of opting for what seems a ruthless culling of these magnificent creatures, we propose humane and sustainable solutions. Fertility control programs have been successfully piloted in various areas, showing promise in managing populations without resorting to slaughter. Protecting larger areas of land for these horses to roam, reducing livestock grazing in critical habitats, and increasing adoptions are also viable strategies that deserve serious consideration.
This is not just about saving wild horses; it’s about preserving our national heritage and acting as responsible custodians of the land and its inhabitants. We must advocate for their freedom and survival, ensuring that our lands remain wild and free for future generations to appreciate and enjoy. Every horse deserves a chance at life, and every American deserves to witness their beauty running free across the plains.
Join me in urging President Trump and the federal government to halt these slaughter plans immediately and explore more humane and cost-effective methods to protect our wild horses. Please sign this petition to save these beautiful creatures and maintain America's rich natural legacy.
