The Trump administration is pushing to eliminate LIHEAP, the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program, which helps over 300,000 Pennsylvania households afford heat, avoid shutoffs, and survive dangerous winter conditions.

This program is a lifeline for seniors, people with disabilities, and families living on the edge. For people like Michael Brown in North Philadelphia, who lost his income after being diagnosed with multiple sclerosis, LIHEAP made the difference between freezing and surviving. It helped him replace a broken heater that he could not afford on his own.

If LIHEAP is cut, it won’t just affect those who depend on it. Utilities may raise rates on everyone to cover the gap, hitting low- and middle-income customers across Pennsylvania. And those left without help will turn to unsafe alternatives to stay warm, risking their health and safety.

Ending LIHEAP would be a cruel and costly mistake. The program is not wasteful. It is essential. Congress must act now to preserve it.
