The Issue

Top management at the U.S. Embassy Riyadh has initiated the trapping of spayed/neutered and cared-for-by-the-community cats from the U.S. Embassy Riyadh grounds and dumping them in an isolated area in the desert without buildings, where they will surely die of thirst and hunger.

Even before this move – which has already resulted in at least three horrifically injured cats during the trapping process (see image) – the local community, including U.S. Embassy Riyadh employees, was forbidden by the management at U.S. Embassy Riyadh from providing food or water to the community cats.

These lethal roundups are inhumane and barbaric, and an exercise in futility. Eradicating cats from the local community will only be temporary, at most. It’s only a matter of time before more cats turn up – unsterilized and unvaccinated – initiating the cycle once again. A successful trap-neuter-return (TNR) program, in which community cats are humanely trapped, sterilized, vaccinated, ear-tipped, and returned to their colony was already previously in operation. Grounded in science, TNR stops the breeding cycle, thereby improving the lives of community cats – and the communities in which they live. The U.S. Embassy Riyadh’s lethal roundups do not reflect our values as a community.

Please sign and share this petition to immediately STOP the trapping and relocation of the U.S. Embassy Riyadh cats and allow the continuation of the TNR program, as well as the provision of food, water and care of the community cats by the local community.
