Stop Toxic Mine Water: Make Closed Loop Systems the Law in Nova Scotia
The Issue
From space Nova Scotia’s coast is no longer the “pale blue dot” Carl Sagan spoke of fragile, alive and whole. It’s a pale blue scar. You can see it from orbit. The Moose River open pit goldmine a wound carved into our landscape. And now the same companies want to repeat the pattern for Goldboro. Seven natural watercourses and 120 wetlands are already slated for destruction. Gold is not a critical mineral. It’s not powering clean energy or protecting the planet. What is critical? Clean water, intact wetlands and the health of the people who live downstream.
Right now Nova Scotia law still allows mining companies to discharge effluent into our environment as long as it meets “acceptable limits.”#boatharbour That isn’t environmental protection it’s legalized pollution. Closed loop systems exist and they work. Other jurisdictions including Finland , Sweden and recently British Columbia have used them successfully. Nova Scotia can too. It simply chooses not to. Our rivers are not toilets and our wetlands are not waste tanks for tailings water. There’s NO excuse for dumping
We the people demand,
- Closed loop water systems for all new and existing gold mines.
- Independent hydrology monitoring not company contractors.
- Public acces to water quality data in real time.
- No new approvals without verified containment and recycling plans.
Our wetlands are natural kidneys they filter toxins and protect rivers from floods. Destroying them and releasing mine effluent into open systems guarantees long term contamination arsenic, cyanide, thallium, sulfides and other poisons in our water and soil.
Moose River’s tailing pond is visible from space. Goldboro will be twice that size with no closed loop containment. We know better, and we can do better. Nova Scotians deserve laws that reflect modern science not mining lobby talking points.
Act Now!
Protect our rivers. Protect our wells. Protect our most precious resource.
Sign to make closed loop water systems law in Nova Scotia.
