Stop Tiverton Crematorium
The Issue
As a resident of Tiverton, along with many other members of our community, I am opposed to the construction and operation of a second crematorium in Tiverton. The proposal places the incinerator adjacent to residential neighborhoods and opposite a childcare facility and medical offices.
A crematorium should not be placed in a residential area for the following reasons:
It is a public health risk. There is strong scientific evidence that crematoriums produce dangerous pollutants linked to serious health problems, especially for children. A study was done by the EPA in 2017 states the following:
The cremation of human remains results in emissions of particulate matter, SO2, NOx, VOC, CO, and HAPs. It is a significant source of mercury emissions, due to mercury in dental fillings, as well as mercury in blood and tissues. In 2017, human cremation resulted in the emissions of approximately 1.8 tons of mercury.
The World Health Organization (WHO) and the United States Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) advises that care should be taken to limit exposure to the above emissions, particularly for vulnerable populations such as babies, children, pregnant women, and the elderly.
Noxious odors and airborne particulates. The building of this crematorium will result in declined quality of life for members of our community. People who live near crematoriums report debris, smoke, and unbearable smells coming from crematoriums. Numerous articles describe the negative impact on residential neighborhoods where crematories have been built.
Decreased property values. Operating a crematorium in North Tiverton could have a strong negative impact on property values and potentially, the ability to sell a property.
There are no federal regulations on emissions from crematoriums. A DEM spokesperson reported that the DEM has only 3-4 inspectors for the entire state. They focus on Title 5 sources (large sources) which means physical inspections would occur rarely for a business of this proposed size.
Please add your name, city and state to help us identify local signers and demonstrate your opposition to the proposed crematorium at 730 Main Road, Tiverton. Thank you!
