Living in the Harris Hill neighborhood, I walk my child to school every day. I almost got hit by a car while standing with the crossing guard at the corner of Main Street and Harris Hill. This terrifying experience isn’t isolated; the crossing guard has had to push my child out of the way of incoming traffic more than once. The intersection is already a dangerously congested area, and the proposed Tim Hortons location at 8503 Main Street would only exacerbate the problem.

The corner of Main and Harris Hill is one of the busiest intersections in our community. Its traffic woes aren't just about congestion, but about the safety and well-being of our residents, especially the children who cross this street daily. Adding a Tim Hortons drive-thru will increase traffic, posing significant risks to both pedestrians and drivers alike.

Studies show that increased traffic density significantly raises the likelihood of accidents. In fact, according to the U.S. Department of Transportation, intersections account for more than 40% of all pedestrian injuries and 20% of fatalities. Situating a high-traffic coffee shop at this already problematic intersection invites higher accident rates and endangers our community’s safety.

Moreover, Harris Hill has limited avenues for new infrastructure that can support the kind of heavy traffic a Tim Hortons usually attracts. Alternative locations for the new store should be explored. Options along less congested areas of Main Street, or in nearby shopping plazas that already have the infrastructure to handle an increase in cars, would make better choices.

We urge the planning commission to reconsider this proposal. Prioritize the safety of our residents and children over convenience. There are better locations for a Tim Hortons that won't compromise our community's safety. Please sign this petition to voice your concerns and keep Harris Hill safe for everyone.
