The Issue

At Southeast Missouri State University, I found myself facing unnecessary stress and financial strain due to parking tickets. Despite diligently paying for my education and housing—a substantial investment on its own—I've been ticketed three times in one week simply for being moments late to my car after crossing campus from class.

Many of us at SEMO are feeling overwhelmed by the added burden of parking tickets, particularly during the week. We already pay significant amounts for tuition, dorms, and other related expenses. Adding parking fines on top of this can make the pursuit of education more taxing and demotivating.

SEMO's current policy impacts not only residents but potentially commuters too, who struggle to make their schedules work in a landscape where parking logistics often clash with class times. It's unreasonable to be penalized in such a manner when the focus should be on learning and personal development.

According to data from the College Board, textbooks, tuition, housing, and living expenses have already increased significantly over the past decade, putting pressure on students nationwide. Fines for parking add insult to injury, creating barriers to education accessibility and adding to student debt.

We propose that SEMO revisits its parking policies to support its students more effectively. By eliminating parking enforcement during weekdays for residents and possibly extending this for commuters, we can reduce the everyday stress for those who are striving to better their futures. Enforcement can remain during the weekends when fewer students and faculty are on campus and alternatives are more available.

This change will show that SEMO values and supports its students' academic journey, focusing resources on education rather than inadvertently penalizing students for logistical realities. We urge the university administration to consider the direct impact on students' wellbeing and act to relieve this unnecessary financial burden.

Join us in asking Southeast Missouri State University to reconsider these weekday parking policies and support those committed to their education. Sign this petition today to make a difference.
