The Issue

Growing up in my hometown of Varanasi, India, the sight of vibrant processions celebrating our many revered deities during festival times filled my heart with pride and spiritual joy. However, the aftermath of these celebrations often left me with a heavy heart. I would witness the same beautifully crafted statues, once adored and worshipped, being carelessly discarded into the sacred waters of the Ganges, turning our holy river into a polluted cesspool.

Despite our spiritual intentions, the remnants of our devotion are exacting a heavy toll on our environment. The immersion of plaster of Paris idols, non-biodegradable decorations, and toxic paints in water bodies is not only disrespectful to our deities but devastating to the delicate river ecosystems. According to a report by the Central Pollution Control Board, idol immersion increases heavy metals like lead and mercury in water beyond permissible limits, adversely impacting aquatic life and the health of millions who depend on these waters.

While the tradition of immersion holds deep cultural and religious significance, it is imperative we evolve our practices to harmonize with environmental preservation. Encouraging the use of eco-friendly materials for idols, creating designated immersion ponds away from major rivers, and educating communities through religious leaders and local schools can lead to meaningful change without losing our cultural essence.

Furthermore, local government authorities can play a pivotal role by incentivizing the production and purchase of biodegradable idols, implementing stringent guidelines during festivals, and organizing large-scale clean-up drives. With collective responsibility and action, we can protect our cherished rivers while honouring our spiritual heritage.

This cause is not only personal; it touches each of us who cherishes our cultural heritage while yearning for a sustainable future.
