The Issue

I am writing this petition because Thomas Jefferson University's current policy of locking students out of their Canvas accounts due to outstanding balances is unfair and detrimental. This policy particularly harms students who are struggling financially, awaiting financial aid disbursements, or facing unforeseen expenses. By restricting access to Canvas, students are prevented from participating fully in their education, which can adversely affect their grades and overall academic standing.

Being locked out of Canvas means that students cannot access critical course materials such as class assignments, syllabi, announcements, and exams. Canvas is the primary platform for students to engage with their coursework, communicate with instructors, and participate in discussions. Denying students access for financial reasons severely disrupts their learning process despite these students, in principle, still being enrolled in their courses.

This means a student can still be enrolled in their current classes while being locked out of the very resources they need to complete them. Jefferson has even acknowledged in its own payment documentation that losing Canvas access “may mean inability to complete assignments and take exams,” which can affect students’ grades and academic progression.

We understand that students have financial obligations and that Jefferson needs to address unpaid balances. But there is a difference between preventing a student from registering for next semester and preventing them from completing the semester they are already enrolled in.

If a student owes money, hold their future registration, but do not restrict their current education. A financial hardship should not be turned into an academic penalty. We are asking Jefferson to end Canvas lockouts for students with outstanding balances and ensure that every student can continue accessing their current coursework while they work to resolve their financial obligations.

This policy effectively penalizes students for financial circumstances that are often beyond their control. Financial difficulties should not block access to education, which is supposed to be an empowering tool for improving one's life circumstances. According to a study by the Public Policy Institute, financial instability is a significant barrier for many students in higher education. The National Center for Education Statistics reports that nearly 1 in 4 undergraduates face financial hardships that affect their academic performance.

We propose that Thomas Jefferson University implement alternative measures that do not jeopardize students' academic progress. Instead of blocking access to essential academic platforms, the university can work with students to set up manageable payment plans or allow access to Canvas during a grace period while financial issues are resolved. Similar practices have been successfully adopted by other institutions and can serve as a model for Jefferson.

The university should prioritize educational access and equity. Education should be a right, not a privilege reserved only for those who can pay all fees upfront and without delay. By revising this policy, Thomas Jefferson University will not only demonstrate compassion and understanding but will also foster an environment where all students have an equal opportunity to succeed.

By signing this petition, you call on Thomas Jefferson University to stop locking students out of their Canvas accounts due to financial holds. Let's ensure every student has the opportunity to access their courses and complete their education without unnecessary barriers.
